What would you assume this slot mechanic means?

I'm interested in genuine first impressions from other slot players. 
 

Without looking up the game rules, what would you assume these treasure chests represent based on this screen alone?

 

What would you think happens as the chests gain more skulls/keys and appear to become more complete?

 

Would you assume the state of the chests has any significance for future bonuses, rewards, or feature triggers?

 

Please answer based only on what you think from the image itself

Why are you asking these questions, if I may ask? Are you doing a survey or something?

There are some similar games that use those kinds of Treasure Chests to award cash prizes when 4 Skulls have been collected. This game looks the same too. Alternatively, collecting the 4 Skulls may reward a feature game (maybe free spins) instead of a cash reward, perhaps with a symbols upgrade feature.

Each additional active skull means that when the chest finally triggers, the bonus round modifier that's activated will be 'buffed' in some manner.

And each chest is it's own modifier to a bonus round. You can trigger multiple chests at once: this is the common "3 pots" gameplay, but with a progression mechanic (though, the progression could merely be an illusion, I don't know).

Seen this in the Dark Waters series of slots.

My first impression is that the green and red chest are triggering some kind of bonus round (one is a jackpot feature and the other mystery bonus?) The coin pile on the right means that you will get a random coin win.
