Should casinos be held responsible for addictions?

Recommended Posts

I watched a program on TV last night about the increase of online gambling in the United Kingdom over the last couple of years and it showcased a few people who had "fallen into the trap" and have ended up breaking up their families because of online gambling...and it went on to blame the actual casinos and betting shops as opposed to the actual players. It had this 70 year old woman who was £100,000 in debt because of loans she had taken out to feed her addiction and she blamed the casinos for not alerting her of her problem!!!! ALERTING HER OF HER OWN PROBLEM!

THESE PROGRAM'S OUTRAGE ME THEY REALLY DO. I strongly believe an addiction is down to the individual and no one else. No one forces them to gamble and take out loans, why should it be down to the casinos to recognise you have an addiction?? I know that's easy for me to say but why should it be up to the casinos to all of a sudden tell a player...wait a minute we can't let u deposit here anymore we think u have a problem. I know all casinos have this 'reasonable gambling' thing..well actually I'm lying I have no idea what it is but it has something to do with this coz they were on about it on the program...I was too busy moaning to valleys at this point though lol.

I love gambling online, having the odd flutter, but I value my life and my family too much to ever put that at jeprody by taking out loans and getting into thousands of pounds worth of debt just to feed my love of gambling, and god forbid I ever knew knew anyone who did do it...I certainly wouldn't blame the casinos...I'd blame the person, a bit of harsh truth is what they need to help them come back to normality. I just feel that the more emphasis people are putting, when they have gambling addictions, on casinos being at fault is going to tighten up the rules of online gambling for us all...and ultimately ruining it for the majority of us who are able to control our urges.

I'm sure I've probably caused some huge debate now..and I hope I haven't offended anyone its just so etching that gets right on my wick!!!
Anyone else have any views?

She obviously just wants her money back. I don't contest that addiction is a real thing and I think there should be more safeguards in general -- I've met some people that literally cannot control themselves who are otherwise perfectly lovely people, but this woman saying that she wasn't "aware" she had a problem is just kidding herself. I pity her, really, but I agree that the only way she'll get over her addiction is by going through the consequences of her actions.

It's not that simple! Being addicted to gambling is a huge and severe problem, probably as bad as being addicted to drugs and alcohol, sometimes even worse... :(

I strongly advice you to have a look at this guide - SOS, I am addicted to gambling - what to do?, no matter if you are addicted or not. Knowing what to expect, sometimes is part of the solution! ;)

You should see Valdes that I have read and replied on that thread. I agree of course its addictive,I don't have an addictive personality so I will never really understand how it feels because I can block out the gambling to realise my life and family are not worth loosing...it must be terrible for people who can't do that I and I feel for them I really do

My point when creating this post the woman they portrayed on the TV program purely got addicted to gambling...through her own fault, the casinos didnt ask her to deposited yet she slated everyone she played in for not recognising she had a gambling program. Sotheby's whole program was based around how bad online casinos are and how the government need to start putting in strict guidelines to prevent us from playing at them...or to have some kind of restrictions

If u have a gambling problem, its down to know one but the individual, I agree casinos should have some for, of process in place where they see an individual depositing large amounts on regular times but I just don't think its fair to blame casinos...not when it's broadcasted on TV and could effectively effect the way I am able to gamble online in the future .

I know its a delicate subject but surely u have to agree with that?

That's why all online casinos have that responsible gambling part on their websites! It's a totally different story if all operators are dealing with these type of matters in the best possible way and if all customers are paying the relevant attention to it... :unknw:

Yeah but they don't do they. I just hope that gambling doesn't get out of hand too much in the UK because ID hate not to be able to spend all valleys money on gambling.

Is in your countries slots machines in almost every shop, gas-station and restaurant and whoever can play those, even kids because they cannot whole time watch it...

Our state-monopoly is much worse than anykind of mafia, I would say.

Haha, but why do you complaint Lord? Isn't it better to have a liberal gambling regulatory like in Finland, than ours in Bulgaria, which is constantly trying to imply more and more restrictions...

Well, here they want to do that too, but only for non-state operators, so they want to keep their monopoly. So not so liberal system, ;)

But I think that you also agree that slotmachines does not belong to everywhere. To some places yes, but not to everyshop. It is impossible to avoid them, and those games sucks.

I have some time kept my boycott towards them. ;)

Not same thing at all. Alcohol is legal, so are cigarettes but you cannot buy those from everywhere and you have to be over 18 years old. Also if you are too drunk, it is illegal to sell you more alcohol...

No I didn't think so. And u can hardly blame a person serving u alcohol because your an alcoholic lol.

My point is just that slotmachines should have their own places, and those should not be everywhere, like here it is now. ;) And that monopoly should be removed also.

Well, it is legal to sell alcoholics of course, but it is not legal to sell if you in that moment are full drunk. :D

I say no, unfortunately, gambling, drinking, smoking, and drugs are all choices that people make. When one realizes that they have a problem, they can go for help, there are organization run mostly by people that used to have these problems and know how to help others. You cannot hold the casinos accountable for choices.

I must admit your logic is rock solid! :good: But... There is one big BUT. What one should do before he realize his problem and who is supposed to help him sense the issue as early as possible?! Are the online casinos capable of recognizing the next addicted gambler just by following his deposit and withdrawal pattern?
