What are internal ID checks

Hey everyone,

I wanted to find out if anyone knows anything about internal ID checks. My dad is a gambling addict and self excluded using gamstop back in July. Around 2 weeks ago he said he had the urge to gamble and signed up to a site and deposited £10, he then came to his senses and self excluded himself without gambling anymore thankfully. He contacted the site and told them he was part of gamstop so they could self exclude him from the site. But what I found interesting is that even though he used a different email address and removed one letter from his name so he could bypass the gamstop checks, they still internally vertified him using credit checks even though his name wasn't spelt correctly and 3 letters from his address was wrong. So that's all it took and he was fully vertified and wasn't asked to send any ID at all. I want to support my dad, we used to gamble together but since July when he signed up to gamstop I also stopped gambling aswell to support him( im not on gamstop as I don't need it). The £10 he lost is no big deal but I'm so concerned about how easily he was able to get past vertification and might try it again in future. I know the UKGC have put mandatory checks in for ID now but when casinos are verifying people against credit files ect with misspelled names and misspelled addresses this surly cant be right? Thoughts on this?

Thanks guys

Hi there!

I'm afraid I don't know much about how Gamstop works but we have loads of experiened members here who do, and I'm sure they'll be along shortly to reply. I just wanted to say how fantastic it is of you to support your dad. I really hope he gets the help he needs.

Hello there and welcome to AskGamblers.

Strongly encourage you and your father to take a look at Gamstop Terms and this one in particular:

Quote

Your Self-Exclusion
During your self-exclusion, you will be prevented from accessing any accounts with online gambling operators registered with the Gambling Commission that match the details you have provided to us as part of your application. It is in your interest to provide us with accurate details consistent with those which you have used to set up accounts with online gambling operators. GAMSTOP may not be able to spot inaccuracies or other differences in account details, and we may not be able to prevent you accessing accounts you have created using, for example, email addresses that you have not provided to us as part of the registration process. GAMSTOP will operate on the basis of the information you have provided at registration and we will not be responsible for failure to spot errors made on your part.

Re how licensed operators are conducting ID checks is a matter of the UKGC competence only as no one among players would have an idea about any of these internal procedures.

Gamstop isn't, YET, fit for purpose (probably why the GC isn't making it mandatory)

Can't speak for the CRA's but they maybe use a 'best match' - I do know that i have 'failed' a credit check when applying for a credit card in the past as i put an E at the end of my surname (and had to get it re-run) so be surprised if 'close' matching would allow you to verify....

Pass.
