Can i still cash a damaged scratch off lottery ticket?

My husband bought a scratch off lottery ticket and accidentally left it in his pants pocket that went through the wash. When we found it we let it dry out and scratched it off and found it was a $500 winner. We took it back to the retailed but they couldn't get the barcode to scan. Do you think if I contact the lottery officials they will be able to cash it? We are in Virginia.
